PICO-8 was the first fantasy console, a virtual machine designed to imitate the early computer hardware game developers of the past worked with. It is notably one of the most restrictive of fantasy consoles, and despite its 16 color GPU the disk size is far too small to hold your typical NES game. Many fantasy consoles were developed after the release of PICO-8, generally with loosened restrictions more in line with the early hardware they imitate.
